From assumptions about when it’s needed, to who should do it, to how long it should take - there’s no shortage of misconceptions. These myths continue to resurface, leading to costly mistakes and project setbacks. So, let’s set the record straight and bust some of the most common myths around software testing.

Myth 1: “Testing is only about finding defects.”

Yes, finding and fixing defects is a big part of testing but it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Testing goes far beyond bug-hunting. It validates that software meets business needs and user expectations. It evaluates usability, performance, security, and compliance. Ultimately, testing helps ensure that you’re not just building software right , but building the right software.

Myth 2: “We don’t need professional testers, we can use business users.”

Business users are domain experts, but that doesn’t make them testing experts. They're often not available when testing needs to happen, and they may miss issues that a trained eye would catch. Zanoo at the BSA Annual Conference 2025: Celebrating 250 Years of Building Societies

Last week, Zanoo had the pleasure of exhibiting at the Building Societies Association (BSA) Annual Conference in Birmingham. This year’s event was particularly special, marking 250 years since the birth of Building Societies, an idea first sparked in a local Birmingham pub. We had a fantastic time and would like to thank everyone who visited our stand to chat about the value of independent software testing. Building Societies know that quality and reliability are key to serving their members well, and testing plays a vital role in achieving both.

Connecting with new and familiar faces

It was a real pleasure to meet so many new and familiar faces throughout the event. A heartfelt thankyou to everyone who stopped by the Zanoo stand to talk with us. Building Societies remain a cornerstone of the UK’s financial services landscape. At Zanoo, our mission is not only to advocate for the importance of software testing in this sector but also to deliver trusted solutions that help societies meet the high expectations of their members. We look forward to continuing the conversations we started.

Speaker highlights

The two-day programme was packed with insightful keynotes and engaging breakout sessions. The passion for member-first service, customer choice, and the mutual model came through in every talk. Here are three standout themes we took away:

�� Local first still leads. Investing in local communities remains a top priority. Building Societies continue to show their commitment through support for grassroots initiatives, living proof of the mutual ethos in action.

�� Loyalty, reimagined. From first homes to final mortgage payments, Building Societies play a key role in life’s biggest milestones. Recognising these and maintaining customer loyalty is more important than ever before. Innovative approaches, like Nationwide’s "NationFried" campaign using influencer marketing and food vouchers, demonstrated how modern tactics can supercharge engagement, especially with younger audiences.

�� Stronger together. A real sense of camaraderie exists across the sector. The idea of shared services or greater collaboration between societies was floated, an exciting possibility that could enhance efficiency without compromising identity.

Putting nerves (and steady hands) to the test

Our nostalgic buzz wire game was a crowd favourite! Despite being for "ages 4+", it proved surprisingly challenging and a fun way to highlight how small mistakes can have big consequences, much like in software testing. Congratulations to Megan from SS&C Blue Prism, who completed the challenge in record time and took home an Amazon Echo Show 5!

Zanoo Testathon And Pizza Making

What a week at Zanoo HQ!

Tuesday saw the Zanoo Test Analyst community come together for a day of testing activities and networking. The Test Analyst community can collectively draw on over 150 years of experience and that’s before the Test Leads, Managers and Leadership team get involved, so lots of knowledge and experience to share and learn about. Part of the day was spent working on a Test-a-thon, involving the teams working through fictional challenging requirements and problems to produce test cases for our fictional client. A really productive day to challenge everyone in a safe space and share learnings. Thank you to Susan Wykes and Casey Burns for planning and facilitating a brilliant day.

And in the spirit of ‘work hard, play hard’, this week also featured our Q3 social. It was time to don the chef hats and aprons for pizza making! From kneading the dough, adding toppings and devouring the creations, everyone enjoyed a slice of the action. Shout out to Stuart Claw for organising.

National Software Testing Conference 2024

This week, our team were pleased to attend the National Software Testing Conference (NSTC) in London. The event featured brilliant speakers, inspiring leaders, and thought-provoking discussions on key topics such as the unrivalled importance of quality, the opportunities available when leveraging AI for testing purposes, and the need to nurture a culture of quality across entire organisations.

We met testing experts and practitioners from across multiple industries, each bringing a fresh perspective on how their sectors and organisations view and prioritise quality. The breadth of interesting presentations, speakers and seminars made for a fascinating 2 days, and reminded us of some really fundamental principles that are important to remember when caught in the slip-stream of “doing”. The 3 most important reminders that we took away were:

Quality is subjective : Quality means different things to different people. It's crucial to define whose perspective on quality you are prioritising — whether it's the stakeholders, customers, or another party.
Testing professionals are the best safeguard of quality : The human eye and the trained skill set of testing professionals are always the most reliable protectors of quality.
Quality is a habit, not a one-time act : Quality must be consistently prioritised and integrated at all levels. It’s not a checkbox activity to be completed and forgotten.

Not only did we attend, but our very own Zanoo leadership was invited to speak at the conference. Trudi Flanagan, our CEO, marked the 7th anniversary of Zanoo by delivering a talk titled ‘The Importance of Listening, Learning, and Advising as a Test Consultancy CEO.’ In her session, Trudi shared insights from her personal journey in serving clients since the company’s inception.

Trudi’s talk highlighted the intersection between delivering high-quality testing services, all the while providing expert advisory and consultancy based on in-depth functional and industry experience. Our clients rely on us to listen to the challenges they are facing regarding testing and quality assurance, learn about their business and customers to problem-solve and co-create testing solutions that will address these matters, and provide trusted, expert advice that is tailored to meet their needs.

Suhas Sukumar also presented a deep dive into Quality Engineering in the FinTech sector. In an industry where regulatory complexity, data confidentiality, and transaction efficiency are crucial, thorough testing of banking solutions is essential to ensure that quality, security and performance is ingrained throughout. Suhas outlined several key testing elements in FinTech, including: transaction scalability testing, compliance and regulatory testing, payment gateway testing, and batch process testing. He also discussed the key benefits of employing quality engineering in FinTech, such as improved automation efficiency, repeatability of tests, extensibility of multiplicative factor tests, and the longevity of automation tests into Business-As-Usual (BAU) processes.

This conference serves as a great reminder of the incredible talent within the testing industry and the exciting opportunities on the horizon. We’re already looking forward to next year’s event.
